Find the patterns in winning numbers

When I first start looking at the lottery data, I thought choosing the least played numbers would give me the best chances of consistently winning. Over the long haul, that may be true. In the short term, my simulations would seem to disagree. So what other patterns could I extract from the data?

My first approach was to look at the distribution of numbers in draws. I was trying to see how often groups of numbers get drawn. It was an interesting interpretation, but ultimately, I don’t think it is helpful data as presented. It was interesting in one respect. I didn’t previous break the data down by the two draw dates (Wednesday and Saturday draws) in each week. That alone may lead me to update each of my analysis pages to show the data more broken out.

My next approach was to look at the draw depth of each choice within a typical lottery pick. Assuming of course, that all lottery picks are sorted from smallest to largest numbers. That limits what numbers are likely to come up in position. The largest numbers (44+) will not appear in the first position. In contrast, the smallest numbers (<6) will not appear in the 6th position. Thus the Draw Depth of winning Lottery Numbers was born. Check it out? Does it give you any additional insights?
